Navy Investigation Report of Bonefish (SS 582) Fire

On April 24, 1988, diesel powered submarine Bonefish (SS-582) a battery bus Class C fire occurred and Ship's Force was unable to disconnect the battery from the burning cables.


  • 10 minutes before the event (announcement of a fire) acrid odor is smelled and wet cables were identified

  • 8 minutes in to the event, the burning cables flashed over (likely an arc fault) and a class A fire started.

  • 10 minutes in to the event 1/2 the electric distribution (AC and DC) were lost

  • 11 minutes in to the event ship started emergency ventilation

  • Approx 30 minutes in to the event, the CO ordered the ship evacuated


3 crew members died as a result of the fire.
