Memorial Tribute to Edwin Kintner

Annually members of the National Academy of Engineers decide on candidate members based on significance of their contributions to engineering and also elect engineers to recognized as memorial tributes. This is the tribute written by Philip Clark for Edmin Kinter (NRHQ 1950 - 1963, 1965-1966).

In 1959, he was designated as the naval reactors’ representative at the Bettis.

In 1959, he received the Secretary of the Navy’s Commendation Medal.

In 1963, he retired from the U. S. Navy as a captain and went to work as manager of a small shipyard in Portland, Maine.

In 1965, he returned to naval reactors at Rickover’s request (one, if not the only, senior person to leave and return to naval reactors).

He left again in 1966 to join the AEC civilian nuclear power program.

His accomplishments were recognized by election to the National Academy of Engineering in 1990. The citation read: “For significant contributions to the development of nuclear submarine propulsion, nuclear power operation, and management of magnetic fusion programs.”
