1964 - SSN 606 (TINOSA) Sea Trial letter

This is the sea trial letter for SSN606 (TINOSA) on September 15, 1964 signed by Rickover.

Text of letter:

At Sea - North Atlantic

15 September 1964

Dear Fern:

We are returning from the first sea trials of the USS TINOSA (SSN-606), our twenty-first attack-type nuclear submarine. The ship successfully completed all tests, including full-power operation, both on the surface and submerged. The TINOSA was built by the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

In addition to the twenty-one attack nuclear submarines, we also have twenty-seven Polaris-type submarines, making a total of forty-eight nuclear submarines in operation. When all nuclear submarines presently authorized by Congress are completed, the United States will have forty-one Polaris and fifty-one attack submarines.

Sincerely,

H. G. Rickover

Mrs. Fern Bernstein
